| Friday, November 6, 2009 VANCOUVER AND THE OLYMPICS. WILL THE REAL ESTATE MARKET GET BENT OUT OF SHAPE?by Antoine Mandy on Fri, Nov, 6, 2009 01:12 AM The short answer is... that already happened last year. The two week boom in tourism is not what will impact the city, what has, is the many years of economic boom that the city has been experiencing while building additional infrastructure to support the games. International event hosting is the vehicle by which cities can mobilize and justify massive transport projects. Montreal developed the first phase of their subway (Metro) to be operational for the 1967 Expo in Montreal with continual improvements and expansions leading up to their 1976 Olympic games. Similarly Vancouver's Skytrain was launched for Expo '86 and the most recent phase completed for the 2010 Olympic games. What will come next is unclear, there are no new infrastructure projects on the horizon and no more scheduled international events to host, but then, this is Vancouver! We have Oceans, mountains, and the best weather in the country. The population grows every year, and we currently have the strongest housing market in Canada, possibly in North America despite the economic downturn.
